POTA: Ham Radio in Nature

Parks on the Air (POTA), which combines the tranquility of nature with the passion for amateur radio, has become more than just a hobby for me—it’s a lifestyle. From the cool, breezy peaks of the Black Sea region to the serene parks along its shores, every moment spent in the field offers a new beauty. Feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin and listening to the gentle melody of the wind while exploring amateur radio frequencies is pure joy.

POTA: The Magic of Field Operations

What draws me to POTA is how it takes the hobby beyond the confines of four walls. When radio waves meet nature’s silence, every contact becomes a success story. The Black Sea region has been one of the most beautiful examples of this adventure. Whether in a forested area or by the sea, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by the beauty of nature while communicating via amateur radio.

The Equipment I Use

Reliable equipment is essential for my field operations.

  • Transceiver: My trusty FT-857, an old but still reliable workhorse. Its compact design and broad frequency support work wonders in the field.
  • Antennas: I use a specially designed EFHW antenna and a few dipole antennas for POTA. They are lightweight, portable, and highly efficient.
  • Power Supply: The 2000 model car battery from my car. It’s my loyal companion, providing power for every operation.

My Team and Stations

One of the best aspects of this adventure is sharing the experience with friends who share the same passion. Together with TA7H, TA7EK, and TA7AZC, we’ve set up stations at many parks and made countless contacts. Each call sign represents a memory shared with another amateur radio enthusiast.

The Growing Popularity of POTA

Events like POTA showcase how vibrant and dynamic the world of amateur radio truly is. This hobby is a perfect opportunity for anyone who enjoys being in nature, feeling the outdoors, and connecting with people. Expanding these types of field activities in the amateur radio community could be a great way to attract younger generations and bring the existing community closer together.

Amateur Radio in the Field: Fun and Learning

Operating in the field not only increases your technical knowledge, but it also allows you to get to know nature better, use your equipment more efficiently, and discover just how fun amateur radio can be.
