OL88YL YL-Event 2024: An Amateur Radio Adventure in Europe

One of the most special events in the world of amateur radio, the OL88YL YL-Event, was held from August 4-10, 2024, in the Czech Republic. Along with 21 YL operators from 11 different countries, I had the privilege of participating. My first trip to Europe, made possible by the power and solidarity of the amateur radio community, became an unforgettable experience in my life.

17,500 QSOs and the Power of Amateur Radio

The event took place at the OK5Z contest station, which brought together amateur radio enthusiasts from all over the world. Over the course of a week, we made 17,500 QSOs, leaving a strong mark on the amateur radio community. This intense and exciting pace once again demonstrated how powerful the spirit of amateur radio truly is.

Event Program and Experiences

Throughout the event, we gained valuable knowledge and experiences through various activities:

  • SOTA and WWFF activities: We set up our antennas on mountain summits and in natural parks, enjoying both the beauty of nature and the joy of amateur radio.
  • Antenna workshops: We worked on antenna design and installation, enhancing our technical knowledge.
  • Historical tours: We explored the fascinating history of the Czech Republic, sharing radio waves with this rich culture.

Thanks and Friendships

This event was also an example of solidarity. I would like to express my gratitude to the sponsors who made this event possible: IARU R1, USKA, Yasme Foundation, RL Radio Amateurs du Luxembourg, OK5Z, OK2ZA, OK2ZI, and the Thiemann family. A special thank you goes to PB2T Hans, Yasme Foundation, Eva, and Andy Thiemann, who made it possible for me to realize this dream by covering my travel expenses.

This week-long event not only allowed me to make connections through radio waves, but also laid the foundation for new friendships and wonderful memories. Meeting YL operators from different cultures made me experience once again how inclusive and strong the amateur radio community is.

73!

This first adventure in Europe reinforced the idea that the love for amateur radio is a power that transcends borders.
